New playground, pond for swimming, movie on Saturday nights, lots of events throughout the summer.
I had the weekend off and drove straight north through the thumb on my way to Lake Huron. As I was driving, I saw this park on the side of M-53 and decided to turn in. This turned out to be a very nice little find. I was tenting it for the weekend and picked a secluded rustic site along the river that runs next to the park. The setting was beautiful next to the river and the full moon lit up the area at night - gorgeous. The rustic sites had the typical picnic table and small fire pit but there was no nearby water pump for the rustic campers - I had to fill up from one of the empty hook-up sites (no real biggie). The roads are dirt, the hookup sites looked fine, the water from the hookup tasted good with no unpleasant taste at all. The whole area is in a small wooded area which is surrounded by farm land and very gentle rolling hills. Because of the trees, all sites appeared to be well shaded. The campground does have showers near the office but you might have to walk a distance if you're farther out. There is no little convenience store on sight, although, if you want to grab a bite they have a little trailer/concession stand - and the sloppy joe I bought was typical fare. Consequently, you should be prepared to bring all your own food and sundry items as this place is out in the middle of the country and there's no gas station or shopping mart immediately nearby that you can make a run to. There is a little man made pond with a beach that looked nice and so if you wanted some sun you could lay out there while the kids played. There's some swings and a small basketball court, but nothing else in terms of playground area. The area and setting is also very nice and the place was surprisingly filled up given the location in the middle of farm country. The campers were very pleasant and seemed to all gather together in various groups and locations and you get the feeling that there are quite a few people who spend their summers here and they all know each other - which was nice as you didn't have the rude people who blast music till 2am like they're the only ones there - and even though there were a lot of people at the park, it quieted down nicely in the evening. Finally, the price - I paid $20 for an overnight on a rustic campground. That seemed like a little more than I'm used to paying at the state campgrounds; however, the area where the rustic sites were, which was right next to the river and away from all the other sites, more than made up for it - I felt like I got a great site for not a bad price at all! Overall, this is a very nice place, out in the country, and I would certainly stop by again.
